We attempt to wrangle our kids in one room to ask them what they’re thankful for. Then, Cori and I have to decide what Thanksgiving sides will make the cut for our holiday meal.

This episode of 7 Minute Stories is made possible by Fishbowl. I didn't really know much about Fishbowl until Aaron started doing his live audio talks about storytelling and podcasting there. Since then, I've been pretty much obsessed.
If you didn't know, Fishbowl is a social app where professionals go to connect. Since joining Fishbowl, I've met a bunch of cool people and have learned a ton from live talks with industry experts. I know Aaron loves it because he works 100 percent remotely as a podcaster.
I'll be announcing new upcoming dates for Aaron's live Fishbowl talks in the future. For now, download the Fishbowl app for free today.
Hey, everybody. Aaron here. So today is Thanksgiving, and to celebrate, Cori and I try to accomplish a few things in approximately seven minutes. The first thing we try to do is to get all the kids together in one room to share what they're thankful for. They're awesome. They're a riot. It's really cute to hear their little voices.
And then after that, Cori and I break down our top three Thanksgiving sides. Controversial stuff here, see if you agree or disagree, and then we end up having to decide which Thanksgiving sides we're going to serve at our Thanksgiving. So a lot of pressure there at the end.
Two quick things: one, my daughter did the art for this episode. She's eight years old and an extremely talented artist, and this is one of her first public displays of her work, and you can find it at 7minutestories.com. I'm proud of her.
Lastly, towards the end of the episode, I mention a holiday recipe. It's fantastic. Not just for Thanksgiving. I mean, it's Thanksgiving today, but I mean, for next Thanksgiving, for this coming Christmas, New Year's, for the holiday season. You're going to love it. And I'm leaving you the recipe at 7minutestories.com.
Just click the blog tab and the recipe will be there for you and your family to enjoy. Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours.
All right, take 128. All three kids. We got them together. This has been a real... I'm thankful that we were able to get you in the same room and that we could actually try to get a few seconds of you on the air.
This has been a challenge, would you say? Don't touch the microphone.
Garrett, you go first. What are you thankful for? You have to speak into the microphone.
Mrs. Corkin.
Your teacher, Mrs. Corkin?
Yes. And my parents.
That's wonderful. [crosstalk 00:02:29]
All right, Lennon? [crosstalk 00:02:33] Hold on. Okay, we're back.
Okay.
Keep going. Yeah, just a little bit of... Just damaged some equipment. That's okay.
Okay.
What are you thankful for, man?
I'm thankful for having people who love me in life, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and everything in the world in the history of ever.
Good. It's a good thing to be thankful for. Lou, what are you thankful for, kiddo?
I'm thankful for-
Blowing up the mic. Here, just talk right here. Here we go. Now you can talk.
I'm thankful for animals-
You can [inaudible 00:03:17]
And food, and people, and coffee, and then some more coffee, and then sleeping, and then eating, and then sleeping, and then breathing, and then eating.
Anything else you're thankful for?
Eating. And also my father.
There you go. Thank you so much.
We got the answer we wanted.
We did it. Thank you so much. In my head, I was thinking this was going to be like poetic things the kids were going to say about how thankful they were, and it was just more matter of fact.
They're small children. They do their best.
And also my mothers.
That's very good.
And siblings.
And siblings, that's good. Thank you, guys. This was a lot of work. You'll get your paychecks in the mail.
[crosstalk 00:04:09] Let's go.
Hey, just jumping in here for a second. Just to let you know, it took us a long time to get all those kids together. So it was a tremendous amount of work, and I'm proud of them.
Okay, once the kids went downstairs, Cori and I start talking about Thanksgiving sides.
All right, timer is going. We got about five minutes. We're hosting Thanksgiving this year, very small gathering. But before we decide what sides we're going to provide to the guests, I want to ask you, what are your top three favorite Thanksgiving sides?
Number one, green bean casserole. Number two, mashed potatoes with gravy. Number three, this is going to blow your mind. I don't know if this is really a dessert, though. Is that weird? Jello pretzel strawberry salad thing.
Really?
Love it. What about you?
Hold on a second. I got to make some clarifications here, because those are great sides, but I need to ask a few questions. First, does the green bean casserole, by the way, you got the good mic again? I got the crappy mic. Just because I love you. I'm thankful for you. And I give you good mics.
I tried to use that microphone and you told me no, because I'm not loud enough, remember? Even though I'm the loudest person in the world.
Okay. So what I was saying was, green bean casserole. Does it have those onions, things on top of it?
Yes. That's what makes it so delicious. They're crunchy.
They're like French's onions?
Yes.
Okay. So I love that. And then you mentioned mashed potatoes. What kind of gravy?
Brown gravy.
Is that, like, of beef?
I think so.
A beef gravy?
I generally just buy it in a jar. Don't judge me.
Okay. And then that...
The strawberry pretzel salad?
Yeah.
I think it's because we went to my Aunt Linda's house when I was a kid, and she always made that, and I just loved it. It's delicious. It's also another crunchy thing, but that's sweet, too.
So top three, those are yours?
Yeah, what are your top three?
Top three. Number one, mashed potatoes and gravy, and it's got to be a beef gravy. I don't do a turkey gravy. I don't do a pork gravy, and I'm not a big fan of a chicken gravy. A little bit too light on that. I like a thick, rich, dark, beef gravy on fluffy mashed potatoes. There's nothing better.
A little bit of butter, some salt and pepper. Can eat them all day. We have the noisiest chairs in the world. That's the first one. Number two, this might blow your mind. You ready for this?
Yes.
Candied yams.
But you like them out of a can.
I like them always. I like them cooked naturally, like a yam steak, or the ones with the marshmallows on top of them, too. I love those yam.
I forgot about those. I have to make those.
They're amazing. That's number two. And then... So that's mashed potatoes and gravy, candied yams, and then this is going to blow your mind. I don't eat a lot of it, but I count it as my number three because it offsets... It's an accent to every other thing.
To your turkey, to your mashed potatoes. If you have corn, I'm looking at the time. I know we're good, is the sliced cranberry sauce. I like it out of the jar, ocean spray. I like it to slide out with a little bit of liquid, just kind of pouring out of there. Then you put it on a plate, you slice it. Oh, my God. There's nothing better.
That's disgusting.
Okay.
I mean, I'm no judgment. Also really quick, can we just take a moment to say thank you to my mom, who is bringing the turkey, because I said, "No thank you. Please help us".
She's bringing the turkey, but we're [crosstalk 00:07:28]. Now we have two minutes to talk about this. So she's bringing the turkey, we're doing the sides.
Yes.
The question is, we've listed our top three. Let's go through maybe five or six sides that we're going to use, and we have to make this choice right now.
Your peppers, you have to make peppers.
Okay, so just so everybody knows, it's called Holiday peppers, and I didn't name it as a top three Thanksgiving side, but it is actually a top three holiday side. In fact, what we'll do is, I'll put the recipe for the peppers.
You're going to share with the world?
On the website, 7minutestories.com.
The peppers, just so everyone knows, are extra delicious if you wait till the next day, and then you have them on a turkey sandwich with turkey on white Italian fresh bakery bread with these peppers.
You guys are going to love these [crosstalk 00:08:14]
Change your life.
Italian peppers, unbelievable. Okay, so we're going to do those. Mashed potatoes and gravy?
Yes.
Stuffing.
Oh, I forgot about stuffing. I love stuffing.
Not my top three, but it's got to be there. Okay. So yes, to stuffing. What about corn?
Yeah. Usually we do it.
Do corn, cream corn?
Who eats cream corn?
I eat cream corn.
There's some cheesy corn, something, that's very delicious.
So we'll have corn.
I like to go rogue sometimes, but not too... I can't go too rogue.
We'll do the green beans. The green bean casserole.
For sure, yes.
We'll do your Jello, right?
Yes, I haven't done that ever for you, I don't think.
Well, I can't wait to have it.
It's so good. I always forget.
We got about 30 seconds. So how about the yams? Yes to the yams?
Of course.
And then beef gravy with the mashed potatoes.
We're going to be very busy.
We have a lot of sides. I think we've gone through a lot. I know if we're missing any, people should reach out and let us know what we've missed.
What are you grateful for?
You, my entire family. I'm truly blessed. I love you guys more than anything.
We love you too. We're very lucky to have you.
Are you grateful?
I am grateful for you, very much. And our children, and my parents, and our families, and the house that we have, and the life that we have, which is incredible.
Sincerely, we are extremely blessed.
Yes. Extremely.
I love you.
And Ken, and Anthony, and Pete. Don't forget them.
We're grateful for all our friends, and everybody, all on the 7minutestory team.
That's our team, yes.
Okay. We're out of time.
Okay.
Love you.
Love you, bye.
